Jerry Dowling - Caricature Artist - Cincinnati, OH
A Windsor, Ontario native, Jerry Dowling graduated from the Ontario College of Art in Toronto with honors in Advertising Design & Illustration in 1962. He spent seven years as package designer for Hiram Walker Distillery, then drew editorial cartoons for The Windsor Herald and The Detroit News, and then joined The Cincinnati Enquirer in 1967.
He stayed there 28 years and even filled in for L.D.Warren and Jim Borgman during their vacations. Created and drew a local comic strip called "F. Stop Fitzgerald" for 14 months. Got into sports at The Enquirer and stayed with it. He did a regular feature called "Pen-Pourri" until 1994. Created the visual version of" The Big Red Machine". Dowling left The Enquirer in 1995 to become a full time freelance artist.
He has lived in West Chester Ohio, north of Cincinnati, for over 30 years with wife Gerri, and has two grown daughters, two sons-in-law, and three grandchildren. As a freelance artist Jerry drew a weekly cartoon for the Cincinnati Reds website. He illustrated the Reds 2003 Spring Training program cover.
Dowling draws a weekly sports editorial cartoon for Cincinnati CityBeat, an alternative tabloid. Other clients have been The Sporting News, The Tennessean ( Nashville), Cincinnati Magazine, Paramount's Kings Island, The Cincinnati Cyclones, American Electric Power, Fraternity Records, Gibson Toys and several radio and television stations.
Dowling's work is featured in books Cincinnati Illustrated, Drawing Attention, The Big Red Machine, The First Boys of Summer, The Big Red Dynasty, Beware...The Song Shark, The Inner Game of Music, Golf in the Comic Strips and The National Cartoonists Society Annual.
Dowling is a lifetime member of the Baseball Writers Association of America (Hall of Fame voter) and also is a member of the NCS (The National Cartoonists Society). He is a member of the NCN (National Caricaturists Network). He has won numerous awards during his career, including Best of Gannett (1980) and Newspaper Illustration Division Reuben Award (NCS 1994). He was inducted into the Cincinnati Hockey Hall of Fame.
