Jan was born in Congo in 1958, and moved to Belgium in 1960. He obtained his mastership in 1979 at Saint-Thomas in Brussels and started teaching arts in 1979 at the Coloma Institute in Mechelen. He was married in 1979 to Chris, and their children are Lieven (1980), Katrijn (1982) and Pieter (1985). He graduated in model drawing from the Royal Academy in Mechelen. His caricatures have been published in several publications in the Belgian press. He has won several awards in Belgium, France, Poland, Portugal, and Iran (2002). Jan was elected in 2003 as 'World's Best Caricaturist' by the Professional cartoonists in Iran. He was invited to Saint-Just-Le-Martel, Saint-Estève and Samer (France) several times. He did masterclass with Sebastian Krueger in Seixal (Portugal) in June 2001. He was the guest of honour in Ourense (Spain) and Dubai (UAE) in March 2002. He was the guest speaker - with Sebastian Krueger - during the National Caricature Network Convention in Orlando, Florida in January 2003. Jan has had working visits at the studios of Alcis Szabo-Reiss (Germany), Superbi (Italy), Krueger (Germany) and Turcios (Spain), Ismael Roldan and Garrett Bender (USA, New York), October 2003. He was the guest artist in Porto (Portugal) in May 2003. Jan speaks Dutch, French, English and German.
Jan has published three books on caricature: Bekketrekkers uit Belgenland, Het Laatste Testament der Belgen, and De Kunst van de Karikatuur.
